Settlers first came to the Spruce Lake area in 1910. Many of the earliest families were German, and they were joined by Scandinavians, British, Ukrainians, Poles and French settlers.
The Canadian Northern Railway, later part of the Canadian National Railway, came through in 1919, and the first grain elevator went up that same year. Besides grain, cattle were shipped out from Spruce Lake by rail.
The last remaining grain elevator burned down in 1983. Spruce Lake lost its village status in 2006. The rail line through the community had been abandoned in 2005 and was torn up in 2008. Today Spruce Lake is an unincorporated community reached from Highway 26.
